H-1B Visa Issue in Spotlight Again

While members of the Senate have indicated support for an increase in the number of H-1B visas from 65,000 to 115,000 per year, the tone in the House is quite different. During hearings this week about immigration and border security legislation, the House failed to support the idea of increasing H1-B visas.

The debate over limits on the number of H1-B visas was particularly contentious in the late 1990s when the dot-com boom created a demand for more IT workers and the tech industry lobbied hard for increases so that more foreign nationals could be hired.

The topic may have cooled off a bit, but many in the tech industry still support the visa increases. And opponents continue to argue that companies should put more effort into filling those positions with U.S. citizens instead of hiring foreign workers. Read more on news.com's site.
