U.S.-China Trade Talks to Include IP Discussion

Mar 29, 2006

Computerworld reports that the United States and China will discuss intellectual property issues during the April 11th meeting of the U.S.-China Joint Commission on Commerce and Trade (JCCT) in Beijing.

U.S. Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez, who is in China this week preparing for the April meeting, has made a series of public statements indicating that IP issues will be a priority at the talks. While China's government has previously agreed to improve enforcement of IP violations in its country, in particular when it comes to software piracy, U.S. officials will stress the need for greater vigilance.

According to the Business Software Alliance, China is no. 3 in the world in software piracy (behind Vietnam and Ukraine) and that piracy resulted in an estimated loss of $3.6 billion in sales for the software industry in 2004.
