Democrats Lose Net Neutrality Vote

Apr 26, 2006

News.com reports that a Democratic-backed net neutrality amendment failed to receive the support it needed today when members of the House Energy and Commerce Committee voted 34-22 against the amendment.

Sponsored by Representatives Ed Markey (D-MA), Anna Eshoo (D-CA), Jay Inslee (D-WA) and Rick Boucher (D-VA), the amendment has the support of a number of Internet content providers, including Amazon.com, Google and Microsoft.

The next step? A draft bill backed by Senators Olympia Snowe (R-ME) and Byron Dorgan (D-ND) asking for similiar net neutrality provisions is making the rounds in the Senate.
