E-Learning Hit By Patent Dispute

An interesting article in BusinessWeek describes the controversy surrounding a patent awarded to e-learning software provider Blackboard Inc. earlier this year for its work on developing the concept of a Learning Management System (LMS) that describes the way most e-learning programs function.

According to BusinessWeek, to its critics, Blackboard's patent claim on the LMS concept is far too broad and "has prompted an angry backlash from the academic computing community" over concerns that the patent will chill innovation in e-learning.
