Google CEO On Net's Impact on Politics
Nov 30, 2006
Google CEO Eric Schmidt gave a talk yesterday at the Republican Governors Association annual conference called "Politics and the Internet: What Does the Future Hold?"
Reuters reports that Mr. Schmidt discussed how Net companies like Google and newly acquired YouTube played a role in the recent mid-term elections and the subsequent jockeying for leadership positions in the new Congress. He cited both the now-infamous video of Sen. George Allen (R-VA) calling an aide to his opponent (and ultimately his victor) a "macaca" during the campaign season, as well as clips of Rep. John Murtha (D-PA) from a 1970s bribery investigation that surfaced during his bid for the new Majority Leader post (which he lost).
According to the article in News.com, Mr. Schmidt said that the politicians "that take advantage of this [technology] most effectively will be the ones that will be the winners of the next election."
