Energy Policy Takes Center Stage
Jan 29, 2007
President Bush called for a reduction in the nation's dependency on foreign oil during his State of the Union address last week, turning the spotlight on the promise of alternative energy sources. The questions now are how, and when, might the federal government roll out new energy policy proposals? Check out the latest Tech Politics podcast from News.com for a Silicon Valley spin on the topic.
There's also a New York Times article today (free sub) that highlights the role of Silicon Valley venture capitalists in supporting alternative energy technologies. According to the Times, VCs invested $727 million in alternative energy startups in 2006 and they "are lending a new voice to the debate [over U.S. energy policy], one that politicians are likely to listen to given the investors' reputation as smart backers of next-generation companies." The article is also available here on News.com.
And this article from yesterday's NYTimes.com also credits the surge of investment in clean tech, at least in part, for revitalizing Silicon Valley's economy...citing a rebound in hiring in the Valley, the Times says "the turnaround coincides with a huge increase of investment in the emerging category of clean environment technology."
