Google CEO Says Anti-Piracy is Priority

Feb 22, 2007

As we've recently blogged about, Google-owned YouTube had to remove tens of thousands of clips from its site after Viacom demanded that its copyrighted material be pulled from the video-sharing site. That "request" has focused attention on YouTube's handling of copyright material.

And, according to this report in Reuters, Google CEO Eric Schmidt confirmed that the issue is a top priority yesterday when he announced that the company "will soon offer anti-piracy technologies to help all copyright holders thwart unauthorized video sharing." That announcement alone might not be enough to satisfy Viacom and other critics who claim that Google isn't planning to do enough to provide those tools to all rights holders. Schmidt said they will be widely available -- in time.
