FCC to Consider Rules for Spectrum Auction

Apr 24, 2007

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is scheduled to hold an open meeting tomorrow at 10:30am EST to outline its plans for auctioning off airwave spectrum that television broadcasters will no longer need after the switch to digital in early 2009.

According to Reuters, there are "a number of companies and groups keen to grab some of the airwaves in the 700 megahertz band," and consumer groups are calling for the FCC to take steps to increase competition in the auction. On Public Knowledge's blog, president Gigi Sohn calls the auction "the most valuable spectrum auction we have yet seen, and likely the last significant auction in our lifetimes," and she outlines her organization's position on auction.
