H-1B "Surge" Makes History
Apr 5, 2007
It only took one day for the U.S. government to reach its annual cap on H-1B visa applications -- the first time in history the cap has been reached so quickly.
On Tuesday, we blogged about the fact that the U.S. government had started accepting H-1B applications for this fiscal year. As News.com has reported, it turns out that the U.S. government received a "record-high 150,000 applications" by Monday afternoon and an announcement was made Tuesday that the annual cap of 65,000 H-1B visas had been reached.
Industry supporters who've been lobbying for an increase in the quota point to the announcement as evidence that Congress needs to advance legislation to allow for more visas, while those who oppose the visas as a threat to U.S. workers claim that the cap is necessary to protect American labor. News.com's Anne Broache explores both sides further in her article.
