H-1B Visa Process Underway
Apr 3, 2007
News.com's Declan McCullagh wrote yesterday about the "rush for H-1B visas" that began April 1st. As McCullagh explains, that is "the start date for technology companies to seek permission from the U.S. government to hire temporary foreign employees under the [H-1B] visa program."
The current cap on H-1B visas allows for up to 65,000 to be issued this year, with additional visas for those with more advanced degrees and/or special circumstances. According to News.com, the quota of H-1B visas was reached last year by May 26, "less than two months after they began to be issued on April 1, 2006."
Increasing the H-1B quota has long been a priority for tech industry groups like the Information Technology Industry Council and Information Technology Association of America that view immigration policy as an integral part of developing a high-skilled workforce and maintaining America's competitiveness.
