Update: FCC's Plans for Spectrum Auction

Apr 26, 2007

In an update to our Tuesday post, Computerworld reports that the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) approved plans yesterday for its upcoming auction of wireless licenses for the 700MHz spectrum band.

While the FCC will continue to invite comments on various proposals related to how the spectrum should be used, particularly in relation to public safety, the Commission did announce that it will "sell pieces of the spectrum in chunks of varying geographic sizes, including metropolitan areas, larger regional economic zones and multi-state regions."

According to a statement by FCC Chairman Kevin Martin, "the mix of geographic license sizes coupled with a proposal for specific geographic build-out requirements - the strictest build-out the Commission has ever proposed - would help ensure that the rural and underserved areas of the country will benefit from the new services that this spectrum will facilitate."

You can read more from Chairman Martin's statement here; comments by other Commissioners are also available on the FCC's site.
