ATT Supports Chairman Martin's Proposal

Jul 20, 2007

AT&T senior executive vice president Jim Cicconi announced his company's support for FCC Chairman Kevin Martin's proposed rules to allow open access for part of the upcoming 700 MHz spectrum auction.

According to this piece in USA Today, "AT&T's endorsement is a shot in the arm for Martin, who has come under a torrent of criticism from Google, Yahoo and others [who] have been pushing for FCC rules that would go much farther in giving consumers choice of devices, software and more."

Cicconi characterized Chairman Martin's plan as "an interesting and creative balance," and said it gives Google and other supporters of open access a "'put up or shut up' opportunity" to participate in the auction.

Harold Feld of the Media Access Project posted the entirety of Cicconi's statement here (Feld also provides his own take on the AT&T announcement on the Wetmachine blog).
