FCC's Open Meeting Underway
Jul 31, 2007
After a delay of about 3 1/2 hours, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) kicked off its meeting about the rules for the upcoming 700 MHz spectrum auction. We'll follow-up later today with a round-up of the news once the hearing concludes.
One of the witnesses who has already addressed the Commission is Jason Devitt, CEO of Skydeck. Devitt, who strongly favors mandatory wholesale open access rules, shared his perspectives as an entrepreneur who's been in the wireless industry for the last eight years. He believes that an open wireless network will "unleash a tsunami of innovation in the U.S." that isn't currently possible because entrepreneurs must now get permission from carriers. He cited the rapid growth and popularity of YouTube, saying that YouTube's success has been possible because of the open nature of the Internet. You can check out an editorial by Devitt that expands on his perspectives in News.com here.
