Google's Own Letter to FCC
Jul 20, 2007
We just wrote about AT&T exec Jim Cicconi's letter to FCC Chairman Martin supporting the proposed rules for the upcoming wireless spectrum auction. But his letter to Chairman Martin isn't the only one in the news today. The Wall Street Journal (sub required) reports that Google CEO Eric Schmidt has announced his company's intention to bid a minimum of $4.6 billion in the 700 MHz auction, provided the rules "are favorable to Google."
In his letter to Chairman Martin, Schmidt said "the current draft order falls short," but that he would commit to bidding in the auction if the FCC's final rules addressed the four-point plan that Google has proposed to allow wholesale open access for a 22 MHz-section of the spectrum. Chris Sacca, head of special initiatives for Google, outlines the company's position in their public policy blog.
