Google Makes its Mobile Announcement

Nov 5, 2007

Google just made an announcement that should end (most of) the rumors about its wireless phone strategy. Director of mobile platforms Andy Rubin wrote on Google's blog, "despite all of the very interesting speculation over the last few months, we're not announcing a Gphone."

What Google is unveiling is a powerhouse consortium called the Open Handset Alliance that will collaborate on a new mobile platform -- that it describes as "the first truly open and comprehensive platform for mobile devices" -- called Android.

Joining Google in the Open Handset Alliance are a mix of 30+ companies, including T-Mobile, Sprint, eBay, LG, Intel, Qualcomm, Motorola, HTC and Samsung. As The Wall Street Journal reported last week, the plan is to roll-out Google-powered phones by mid-2008.

Here's a 2-minute YouTube video from some of the brains behind Android (and its sci-fi name).
