Frontline's Closure

Jan 9, 2008

Details are still sketchy, and news that Frontline Wireless has closed for business has led to questions about what will happen to the spectrum the startup was expected to bid on when the Federal Communications Commission's (FCC) 700 MHz auction gets underway on January 24th.

Founded by former FCC chairman Reed Hundt, Frontline had embarked on an ambitious plan to secure the license for a piece of spectrum known as the D block that would allow it to create a national public safety broadband network. It's now unclear what will happen with that license, which includes strict restrictions about how and when the spectrum gets used.

According to Reuters and others, analysts at Stifel Nicolaus contend that Frontline will not participate in the auction because it failed to raise the $128 million deposit that was due to the FCC last week.

NOTE: Reed Hundt will be among the speakers at Tech Policy Summit in March.
