It's All Fun and Games...Until Someone Sues
Jan 16, 2008
It looks like the makers of Scrabble have a few choice words about Scrabulous, a free online version of the classic board game that is one of Facebook's 10 most popular applications.
Hasbro and Mattel, who share the rights to the Scrabble brand, have issued cease and desist letters that accuse Scrabulous' makers of violating trademark law. According to reports in BBC News and The Wall Street Journal, the toy companies are targeting Scrabulous' owners Rajat and Jayant Agarwalla, and have also asked Facebook to remove the app from its social networking site.
I myself am not one of the 600,563 "active daily users" who play Scrabulous on Facebook, but company founder Mark Zuckerberg admitted to his own gameplay during his 60 Minutes interview last Sunday. And there's already a Facebook group where supporters, and critics, are debating the issue.
