Big Thinkers Tackle Big Challenges
Feb 15, 2008
What would you pick as the most significant engineering challenge on the planet?
Would it be making solar energy affordable? Improving urban infrastructure? Securing cyberspace?
To get answers to that question, in 2006, the U.S. National Academy of Engineering (NAE) formed an international committee of top technical experts who were tasked with identifying the "Grand Challenges for Engineering in the 21st Century." They announced their findings today, just in time for the start of National Engineers' Week this Sunday.
Along with input from other researchers and the general public, committee members -- including former defense secretary William Perry and Google co-founder Larry Page -- responded with a list of 14 challenges that could be met through the use of science and technology.
