Sciencedebate 2008: Moving to May?

With it looking less and less likely that any of the presidential candidates will accept the invite to participate in Sciencedebate 2008 in Philadelphia next week, the event organizers have sent out invitations for a debate that would take place in Portland, Oregon some time in May.

If it materializes, the debate titled "Is America Losing its Competitive Edge?" will be hosted by David Brancaccio of the PBS show NOW and will be televised nationwide. The only thing needed is at least one of the remaining three candidates to accept (organizers say they will move forward even if only one person says yes).

It's a simple but challenging proposition: get the candidates together for a discussion focused solely on science and technology. So far, according to an MSNBC.com report, Sen. Barack Obama declined the Philadelphia invite, Sen. Hillary Clinton has been noncommital and Sen. John McCain's team hasn't responded to it. Hopefully, the new plan will work better for everyone.

We proudly jumped on the Sciencedebate bandwagon earlier this year as a member of the "Blogger Coalition" after learning about the grassroots movement on NPR, and we encourage all of you to learn more about the effort. Regardless of which candidate you support, the debate offers an important opportunity to elevate the discussion about science and technology and to clarify how each candidate would approach key issues if elected President.
