New Rules Restrict 'Sexually Suggestive' Content on YouTube
Dec 2, 2008
YouTube has announced a number of new rules for its video sharing site, including stricter standards for what type of content can be viewed by those under 18 years of age. According to a post on the company's blog, YouTube already has a policy of removing videos that contain pornographic images or sex acts. But it will now restrict any content considered to be "sexually suggestive" to viewers who are 18 or older (the company's definition of sexually suggestive is described here).
In addition to the age restriction, YouTube said that videos containing profanity or sexually suggestive material will be "algorithmically demoted" so that they don't appear in the site's Most Viewed or Top Favorited categories.
NewTeeVee writer Chris Albrecht had this to say about the news:
Ironically enough, actively monitoring what goes up on the site and removing what's deemed to be objectionable sounds an awful lot like what YouTube, in its ongoing legal battle with Viacom, is saying it can't and/or won't do.
